Bishop Galeone: Remembered for His Love of Jesus

At a solemn Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine, Bishop Emeritus Victor Galeone was remembered as a man who put Jesus first and himself last and whose life was built on three pillars of faith, family and friends.

Bishop Galeone, 87, died May 29 in Baltimore, Md., where he grew up, served as a parish priest, and returned when his health began to fail. He is entombed in the bishop’s mausoleum at San Lorenzo Catholic Cemetery in St. Augustine.

Msgr. James Farmer of the Archdiocese of Baltimore who preached the homily at the funeral, said Bishop Galeone is remembered in the archdiocese as a man of prayer, a lover of Latin, and a supportive friend to his brother priests.

Msgr. Mike Morgan, Bishop Galeone’s chancellor, who preached the homily during Vespers the night before the funeral, said he thinks the bishop will be remembered as a teacher with priorities for the youth and young adults, as well as marriage and family.

The next issue of the St. Augustine Catholic magazine will have additional coverage of Bishop Galeone’s funeral. The funeral Mass can be viewed on the diocesan YouTube channel, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_El-S8Gukg.
