Las Posadas scheduled for Dec. 13 at Our Lady of La Leche

A Christmas tradition each year at the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche at Mission Nombre de Dios is Las Posadas, and this year it will take place on Saturday, Dec. 13.

Its origins date back to 16th-century Mexico, and it involves reenacting the Holy Family’s journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem as they seek shelter on the eve of Jesus’ birth to celebrate the spirit of Advent.

This year’s event is officially called “Una Noche de Navidad: 16th Century Presentation of ‘Las Posadas,’” and will get underway at 11 a.m. with confessions available in both English and Spanish at the main Shrine church. Mass in English will follow in the church at noon with a Spanish Mass scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

Sacred music will be played during exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from 2:45 to 8 p.m., and Las Posadas processions will be taking place from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Refreshments will be available to purchase during those portions of the program.

Reenactors will help add to the authenticity of the procession experience as they will be dressed in 16th-Century period clothing.

Attendees can enjoy a sweet treat after their procession with complimentary cookies and candy canes available in the Pilgram Center.

A donation of $10 per adult is suggested and children younger than 12 years old are free with an adult registration.

Reservations can be made for processions, but walk-ups will also be accepted. Parking on site is free but limited spots are available.

The event check-in table at the grounds will be located at the Michael Gannon Bridge.

The National Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche is located along the route of the City of St. Augustine’s Nights of Lights, which makes Las Posadas a perfect addition to a festive night.
