Honoring the Service of Our Veterans and Their Families

From Bishop Erik Pohlmeier

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On this Veterans Day, we offer our deep gratitude to the men and women who have served in the Armed Forces of our nation. Their commitment to preserving peace and protecting human dignity reflects a profound willingness to place the needs of others before their own. Here in the Diocese of St. Augustine, we are especially mindful of the strong Navy and military presence in our region. Many of our parishes are blessed with active-duty service members, veterans and their families whose daily lives enrich the life of the Church.

Military service touches not only those who wear the uniform, but also the loved ones who support them. Spouses, parents and children shoulder long separations, relocations and the challenges of returning home to a new rhythm of life. To the families of veterans and service members, please know of our prayers and our gratitude.

We also recognize that some veterans carry wounds that may not be immediately seen. Experiences of conflict can leave deep impressions on the heart, and the transition back into civilian life is not always easy. Increasing awareness across our nation of the emotional and spiritual toll of service is a reminder that our veterans need not only our admiration, but also our accompaniment. The Gospel calls us to be communities that listen, welcome, support and walk together toward healing and renewed hope.

Our parishes can play a meaningful role in this journey. The desire for belonging, purpose and connection is something we all share. Veterans bring gifts of discipline, teamwork, leadership and faith shaped through their service. When we create spaces for genuine fraternity, prayer and service, we invite all people—including veterans—into encounters that strengthen the whole community.

As we give thanks, let us also lift our voices in prayer for peace around the world. Veterans understand the cost of conflict in a way few others do. Their witness urges us to pray earnestly for leaders to choose the paths of dialogue, justice and mercy.

To all veterans in our diocese, thank you for your courage and service. May our Lord grant you strength, healing and hope.

Yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Erik T. Pohlmeier
