Athletes strive for the perfect game, but it is a difficult feat to accomplish.
That is, until a pair of quarterbacks at Diocese of St. Augustine schools achieved just that and did so on the same night.
Seniors Gavin Hawkins of Bishop Kenny High School and Cody Ott of St. Joseph Academy each finished off perfect nights passing the ball, as they completed every pass they threw, many of them resulting in touchdowns during their Oct. 3 matchups.
Hawkins was a perfect 10-for-10 passing for 272 yards and six touchdowns during a 56-14 win over Rickards High as the Crusaders made the long trip to Tallahassee for the contest.
Ott followed suit as he converted on all 11 of his pass attempts for 253 yards and five scoring strikes to help the Flashes improve to 6-0 on the season with a 49-12 homecoming victory over Young Kids in Motion Academy of Jacksonville.
Both players understand that they could not have had the performance they did without the contributions of their teammates around them.
Fellow senior James Davis III has been Hawkins’ favorite target throughout the year and that was the case once again as he hauled in two of Hawkins’ six touchdown passes to finish with 148 receiving yards to lead the Crusaders.
Both quarterbacks spread the ball around and get an array of their playmakers involved in the game plan, and this was evident as the Flashes had four different players on the receiving end of Ott’s five scoring strikes.
The Flashes are averaging a whopping 40.5 points per game this season, while the Crusaders have been explosive as well, averaging 33 points, and they have shown little signs of slowing down with four weeks left in the regular season.
