The Office of Vocations hosted the second annual Priest vs. Seminarian Volleyball Game at San Juan del Rio Catholic Church on Nov. 30, beginning with a special Mass celebrated by Bishop Erik Pohlmeier on the Feast Day of St. Andrew.
The event, envisioned by Father Clay Ludwig, director of vocations and Bishop Pohlmeier, aims to foster fraternity among diocesan priests and seminarians while building community and raising awareness about the vocation of the priesthood. Men discerning the priesthood get a firsthand look at the camaraderie among the clergy, making the day both inspiring and enjoyable.
Priests across the diocese joined the competition, determined to defend their victory from the inaugural 2023 game. However, this year, the seminarians claimed the championship in a thrilling three-set match, proving their skills on the court and earning the coveted trophy—akin to the Stanley Cup in its rotating tradition. After their defeat in year one, the seminarians increased their practice and preparation for the day.
The stands were packed. Attendance doubled from last year, with approximately 300 enthusiastic supporters packing the bleachers. The event showcased the diocese’s vibrant community, from parents of seminarians to men discerning the priesthood and parishioners cheering for their priests. Planning is already underway for the 2025 competition.
The day concluded with a meal provided by the San Juan del Rio Knights of Columbus, featuring burgers and hot dogs. This spirited event continues to highlight the joy of vocations and the power of fellowship in the church.
