World Mission Sunday, organized by the Propagation of the Faith, is Sunday, Oct. 19. This is a day set aside for Catholics around the world to recommit themselves to the Church’s missionary efforts through prayer and sacrifice.
This year’s theme focuses on the words of St. Matthew’s Gospel, “I will build my church,” which highlights the outreach of local churches through priests, religious and laity among the poor and marginalized. Their important work helps to change lives every day.
Saint John Paul II described World Mission Sunday as “an important day in the life of the Church because it teaches how to give: as an offering made to God, in the Eucharistic celebration and for all the missions of the world.”
The Offerings that will be collected on World Mission Sunday are destined for a common fund of solidarity distributed, in the Pope’s name, by the Society for the Propagation of the Faith to the poor and suffering in more than 1,150 mission dioceses around the world.
