Indulgences

Jubilee Year of Hope: A Path to Renewal and Grace

The Diocese of St. Augustine invites all faithful to participate in the spiritual opportunities offered during the Jubilee Year of Hope 2025, proclaimed by Pope Francis. One of the central graces of this Holy Year is the plenary indulgence, a priceless gift of divine mercy that allows the faithful to experience the fullness of God’s forgiveness and healing.

What Is a Plenary Indulgence?

A plenary indulgence is a remission of all temporal punishment due to sin, granted by the Church through the merits of Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Communion of Saints. It is an invitation to conversion, healing and a deeper relationship with Christ. Pope Francis has described indulgences as a “Jubilee grace” that reveals God’s limitless mercy.

How to Receive a Jubilee Indulgence:

The Apostolic Penitentiary has outlined specific conditions for obtaining a plenary indulgence during the Jubilee Year:

Pilgrimage: Visit a sacred Jubilee site. In the Diocese of St. Augustine, the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception of Jacksonville, the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine, the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche at Mission Nombre de Dios and the Santa Fe Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche in High Springs have been designated pilgrimage locations.

Those traveling to the Vatican can receive a plenary indulgence by visiting any of the four major papal basilicas in Rome:

  • St. Peter’s Basilica (Vatican)
  • St. John Lateran (Archbasilica of the Holy Savior)
  • St. Mary Major
  • St. Paul Outside the Walls

At these sites, pilgrims are invited to participate in a moment of prayer, Eucharistic adoration or a liturgical celebration.

Prayer and Devotion: Participate in Eucharistic adoration, recite the Our Father, the Profession of Faith and appropriate invocations to Mary.

Sacramental Preparation: Be in a state of grace by receiving the sacrament of reconciliation and Holy Communion.

Pray for the Pope’s Intentions: Show unity with the Church by praying for the intentions of the Holy Father.

For those unable to make a pilgrimage due to age, illness or other serious impediments, an indulgence can still be obtained by uniting spiritually with the faithful through prayer and offering their sufferings or hardships to God.

Additional Opportunities for Indulgences:

The faithful may also gain indulgences through works of mercy and penance, such as:

  • Visiting the sick, elderly or those in need, symbolizing a “pilgrimage” to Christ present in them.
  • Abstaining from distractions or unnecessary consumption and donating to the poor or charitable causes.
  • Performing acts of charity and mercy in service to those burdened by various needs.

A Call to Renewed Faith

This Jubilee Year is a time to deepen your faith, strengthen your commitment to the Gospel and experience God’s boundless mercy. Through the grace of indulgences and the call to conversion, the faithful are invited to draw closer to Christ and share his love with the world.
