The Jubilee Year of Hope 2025

Welcome to the Jubilee 2025 – “Pilgrims of Hope”

The Jubilee is a sacred tradition rooted in Scripture and history, offering a unique opportunity to encounter God’s mercy and renew our commitment to live as disciples of Christ. Originating in the Bible, the Jubilee was celebrated every 50 years as a time to reestablish harmony with God, our neighbors and creation. It was a time of liberation, forgiveness and restoration, where debts were forgiven, misappropriated lands returned, and the land allowed to rest (cf. Leviticus 25:8-13).

Jesus embraced the spirit of the Jubilee when he proclaimed:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord” (Luke 4:18-19; cf. Isaiah 61:1-2).

Since Pope Boniface VIII declared the first Jubilee in 1300, the Church has embraced this tradition as a “Holy Year,” a time of transformation through God’s holiness. Over centuries, Jubilee celebrations have evolved to include pilgrimages, the opening of the Holy Door and opportunities to receive a plenary indulgence. Each Holy Year invites the faithful to rediscover the beauty of God’s mercy and the call to conversion.

In this spirit, the Diocese of St. Augustine joins the universal Church in celebrating Jubilee 2025: Pilgrims of Hope. Together, let us embark on this sacred journey to renew our relationship with God, deepen our love for one another and bear witness to the hope that sustains us as followers of Christ.
