The Archives of the Diocese of St. Augustine preserves the permanent records of the diocese, its people, institutions and associations. Our collection represents the heritage of the local church and its people for more than four centuries. Established by the Bishop, and located at 34 Aviles Street on the property of the Sisters of St. Joseph Convent, its mission is to serve the administrative needs of the diocese, but it is also open for scholarly research, in keeping with the precepts of canon law and the civil laws of the United States.

“Preserving the work of the Holy Spirit through the Catholic Church in North Florida.”

The mission of the Archives & Records Office of the Diocese of St. Augustine is: to administer the Archives & Records Program in accordance with Canon 482, which encompasses Records Management (General Archives, Canon 486), Historical Archives (Canon 491) and Non-Public Archives (Secret Archives, Canon 489); to serve as the institutional repository for permanent records of historical and enduring value; and to promote a protection of those records and an understanding of the Catholic Church, her history, and her heritage in Florida.

Volunteer and Intern at the Archives

The Archives is developing a volunteer and internship program as a support to core services.

Right now, volunteers are really needed to help with basic records preservation (removing staples and paperclips) and to do database entry in excel spreadsheets (to get the catalog ready to move to an online system). Please contact Katy Lockard (klockard@dosafl.com) for more details.

The Archives always welcomes interns in support of their graduate education program. We offer an “Introduction to Archives” Internship during an agreed period of time, where students are given practical experience in Archives Foundations (Collections Management, Preservation, Research, etc.) and a processing project to add to their resume. Other internships can be tailored to student program of study based on degree focus and research topics. Please contact Katy Lockard (klockard@dosafl.com) for more details.
