Faith, Fun and Fastpitch: A Jubilee of Sports Celebration

Catholics gather for a joyful night at the ballpark

By Kimberly Whiting

A warm summer evening, a ballpark buzzing with excitement, and Catholics from across the Diocese of St. Augustine coming together to celebrate faith and fellowship – this was the spirit of the Jubilee of Sports held June 7 at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville.

Dozens turned out to cheer on the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp as they faced off against the Durham Bulls, blending the thrill of baseball with the joy of community. The evening began with food and conversation in a festive atmosphere, followed by a special reflection and prayer led by Father Jason Trull, vicar general of the diocese and sports fan!

“In the Jubilee Year, we are called to celebrate life – and sports are part of that,” Father Trull said as he shared his own experiences growing up playing sports. He spoke about the role of athletics in Catholic schools and how sports help prepare young people for life through discipline, teamwork and spiritual growth.

“Sports are rooted in Scripture,” he said, quoting 2 Timothy 4:7: “I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith.” He also drew inspiration from St. John Paul II: “Sports contribute to the love of life and teach sacrifice, respect and responsibility, leading to the full development of every human person.”

Father Trull reminded everyone that even professional teams, like the Jacksonville Jaguars, recognize the value of spiritual support, with diocesan priests serving as chaplains.

As the game got underway, Bishop Erik Pohlmeier joined in the festivities, greeting families, friends and parishioners who gathered from around the diocese. The night brought people together through their shared love of sports and faith, creating a sense of joy and unity that echoed throughout the stands.

The celebration reached its peak when Jumbo Shrimp slugger Troy Johnston hit a home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, securing a 3-2 win. The evening closed with a dazzling fireworks show lighting up the night sky – capping off a memorable event filled with faith, fun and fastpitch.

Stay tuned for more diocesan outings with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. Details and ticket information will be announced in the coming months.
