The National Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche in St. Augustine hosted the National Association of Shrine and Pilgrimage Apostolate (NASPA) Annual Convention from Nov. 6-8. Themed “Pilgrims of Hope: Preparing for the 2025 Jubilee,” the event welcomed 52 representatives from 15 national shrines, reaffirming their commitment to serving the faithful through their sacred missions.
The convention focused on the upcoming 2025 Jubilee, which Pope Francis will inaugurate with the opening of the Holy Door in Rome on Dec. 24. This extraordinary event, occurring every 25 years, calls Catholics to a year of renewal, marking a “Jubilee of Hope” celebrating God’s enduring presence.
Participants engaged with speakers who addressed shrines’ spiritual and operational missions. Brother Ivan Panganiban emphasized shrines’ unique role in faith and culture, while Msgr. Vito Buonanno highlighted the richness of diverse devotional practices. Archbishop Rino Fisichella, addressing attendees remotely from Rome, described shrines as “enduring witnesses of hope.”
Bishop Erik Pohlmeier shared his personal vocation story, reflecting on the transformative power of pilgrimages and their ability to reveal God’s presence in everyday life. Discussions centered on making shrines more inviting and sacred through music, prayer opportunities and scripture.
