The first days of November bring a special time of reflection and prayer for Catholics everywhere. On Nov. 1, the church celebrates the Solemnity of All Saints, often called All Saints’ Day. This holy day of obligation is dedicated to honoring all saints—both those recognized by the church and those known only to God. It’s a reminder to look to these holy men and women as our guides, inspiring us to live a life dedicated to Christ.
The next day, Nov. 2, is All Souls’ Day when Catholics focus on the faithful departed who are undergoing purification in purgatory. It’s a day of hope, where we gather to pray for our loved ones who have passed, trusting that our prayers will help them reach the fullness of God’s glory.
These two days beautifully emphasize the unity among the Church Triumphant (those in heaven), the Church Suffering (those in purgatory) and the Church Militant (those still living on earth). It’s a spiritual reminder that we’re all connected and that our prayers have the power to cross the boundaries between life and death.
The All Saints’ Day tradition dates to May 13, 609, when Pope Boniface IV dedicated the Pantheon in Rome to the Blessed Virgin Mary and all martyrs. Centuries later, Pope Gregory III moved the feast to Nov. 1, where it has remained a vital part of Catholic life ever since. On All Souls’ Day, the Church encourages us to pray the Prayer of Commendation, helping the dying and the dead unite with Christ as they journey toward heaven.
As we approach these solemn days, let’s remember our loved ones who have gone before us and pray for those nearing the end of their earthly journey. It’s a time to embrace the hope of Christ’s promise of eternal life.
