Jacksonville, Fla. – The Diocese of St. Augustine proudly announces that the U.S. Department of Education awarded St. Michael Academy (SMA) in Fernandina Beach the 2024 National Blue Ribbon School Award. This prestigious honor recognizes the academy’s outstanding commitment to academic excellence and remarkable success in fostering student achievement.
The National Blue Ribbon Schools (NBRS) Award is one of the highest distinctions a school can receive in the United States. St. Michael Academy earned this recognition as an Exemplary High Performing School, highlighting its dedication to academic rigor and providing a nurturing, faith-filled environment. To qualify, schools must demonstrate standardized test scores in the top 15 percent nationwide, a benchmark SMA proudly surpassed.
Superintendent of Schools, Deacon Scott Conway, expressed his gratitude and pride in the academy’s community, stating, “It is a tremendous honor to receive this award from the U.S. Department of Education. St. Michael Academy exemplifies the long-standing tradition of academic excellence in Catholic education. This achievement reflects the hard work of our students, staff, families and parish community. Congratulations to all who contributed to this success.”
The Diocese of St. Augustine commends St. Michael Academy for its academic and character formation leadership. Former principal Susan Dorner, who led the school during the nomination process, and current principal Tricey Godfrey have been instrumental in maintaining SMA’s reputation as a leader in Catholic education.
“St. Michael Academy has always prioritized creating a safe and nurturing environment where students excel academically, socially and spiritually,” said Bishop Erik Pohlmeier. “This National Blue Ribbon designation affirms the school’s mission to inspire excellence and compassion in every student.”
The U.S. Department of Education recognized 356 schools nationwide as 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools, honoring institutions for exemplary teaching and learning environments and their commitment to data-driven instruction and collaboration among educators, families and communities. St. Michael Academy now joins an elite group of schools serving as models of educational excellence across the country.
