Labor: A Sacred Act of Faith and Justice

A 2024 Labor Day Statement by Bishop Erik T. Pohlmeier

My Dear Brothers and Sisters,

As we celebrate Labor Day, let us turn to the teachings of our Catholic faith and find inspiration in the sacred scriptures. Labor is more than just a means of earning a living; it reflects our human dignity, our role in God’s ongoing creation and our commitment to the common good.

In Genesis, we learn that we are made in God’s image, reflecting the nature of the Divine Worker. Just as God created the world, we are invited to engage in work that honors our shared humanity. Whether in an office, factory, field or home, our labor can be an act of love, service and stewardship.

Catholic social teaching reminds us of the dignity of work and the rights of workers. On this Labor Day, we are called to remember the value of every individual’s contribution. It is our duty to ensure that workplaces are safe, just and respectful of human dignity. Fair wages, reasonable working hours and protection of workers’ rights are essential to building a just society.

In Laudato Si, Pope Francis’s 2015 encyclical, subtitled “On Care for Our Common Home,” he highlights that work is a path for personal growth and living out our values. Through our labor, we participate in God’s creative work and contribute to his plan for humanity. Today, let us reaffirm our commitment to upholding the dignity of all workers and to recognizing the spiritual significance of our daily tasks.

As we rest and reflect on our work, may we give thanks to God for the opportunities we have and strive to build a society rooted in love, compassion and justice. May St. Joseph the Worker guide us in our efforts.

In Christ,
Most Rev. Erik T. Pohlmeier
Bishop of the Diocese of St. Augustine
