The Catholic school community of the Diocese of Saint Augustine is extremely proud of our
rich tradition dating back to the first Catholic school in what is now the United States, founded by the Franciscans in 1606 in St. Augustine. From our humble beginnings and through the years, our Catholic schools have educated generations of students in the tenets of the faith and the pursuit of knowledge. Over the past decade the population has grown 25% to more than 11,000 students. The increase in our student population led to our building five new elementary and two new high schools in the late 1990s and early 2000.
This growth is a testimony of the bishops who have believed in Catholic schools along with priests, religious and laity who have been inspirational leaders along the way. Today 90% of our faculties are made up of lay people who have answered the call to teach in a Catholic school. They stand on the shoulders of giants and see that to be truly a "Catholic" school one must be committed to the gospel of Jesus Christ and the teachings and traditions of the Church. We are blessed with teachers who not only strive for excellence, but also serve as role models.
Be sure to view the video of our schools on this website. We hope that it captures our history and shows the environment in which our students learn today.
May the Lord continue to bless you,
Patricia Bronsard Superintendent of Catholic Schools Diocese of Saint Augustine
Mission Statement We, the Catholic school community, of the Diocese of Saint Augustine, strive to provide a Jesus centered educational environment rooted in Gospel values and in our rich Catholic heritage.
We Believe
- that we must continue to build on our rich history of education in the diocese
- that we must respect the dignity of each individual within the school community
- that, our partnership with parents, each student’s spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional and physical growth develops in an atmosphere, which stresses Gospel values
- that the spiritual formation of the entire school community - students, faculty and parents must be fostered
- that worship, community, service, self-discipline and academic excellence must be part of the school’s program and atmosphere
- that we must prepare our students to examine the implications of moral, social justice and global issues in an ever-changing society
- that by our example we must offer models of Christian witness to our students and the entire community
